Iran — five-day Hormuz deadline after UNGA talks stay far apart (23–24 Sep)
The first US–Iran mediator shuttle in months (Qatar conveying between FM Araqchi and US envoys Witkoff/Kushner) bookended duelling UNGA speeches and produced no public concessions. A senior Iranian official told Reuters the sides remain far apart; Tehran is reviewing Washington’s reply to proposals that prioritize lifting the US naval blockade and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
President Pezeshkian told the General Assembly Iran will not bow to pressure and rejected Trump’s “annihilate” threat while leaving the door open to talks “without accepting the language of force.” Secretary of State Rubio said any deal needs prolonged hard work and that military options remain. Separately, Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei said the US has been given a five-day deadline to meet Tehran’s conditions for opening Hormuz. Washington also moved to impose secondary sanctions on countries that allow Iranian flights after Wednesday; Rezaei warned neighboring airports would be made unusable if they cut Iranian flights.
Why it matters: the chokepoint that once carried about a fifth of global oil and LNG is now on a short diplomatic clock, with secondary flight sanctions and mutual annihilation/retaliation rhetoric still live.
Ukraine — Zelenskyy warns of a painful winter for Russia if energy truce fails (23 Sep)
At the UN General Assembly, President Zelenskyy warned that if Kyiv and Moscow cannot agree a limited truce on energy attacks before winter, Ukraine will strike back and make the season painful for Russia. He pressed for de-escalation steps now, noting Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign against Russian warehouses, ports, and oil refineries, and pointed to Xi Jinping’s potential sway over Putin (Xi was due White House talks with Trump on Thursday after Zelenskyy’s Tuesday energy-ceasefire discussion with Trump).
Rubio said after meeting Lavrov that both sides had voiced interest in a limited ceasefire covering grain and energy targets, but a Russian Foreign Ministry statement reaffirmed commitment to the “special military operation,” and Lavrov told the Security Council Moscow would not countenance a temporary pause. At a Crimean Platform sideline summit, Zelenskyy said Ukraine is ready for a Black Sea maritime truce along lines floated by Egypt, India, and Turkey and is waiting on Russia’s response.
Why it matters: winter energy and Black Sea shipping are the live negotiation track while a wider ceasefire stays frozen — and wheat importers dependent on the corridor are already seeing soaring prices.
